Introduction

Johanniter Unfallhilfe / JUH is a Protestant aid organisation, established on 7 April 1952 in Bad Pyrmont on behalf Rudolf-Christoph von Gersdorff, a German major general, due to the increasing number ot motor vehicle accidents. It has nine regional subdivisions and more than 200 local groups. It has about 25,000 employees and 40,000 volunteers and more than 1,250,000 members and sponsors.
The organisation was iniated by the Bailiwick (German: Ballei) of Brandenburg of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

Brief History of the Bailiwick of Brandenburg

The bailiwick was formally established in 1326. In 1426 Lord Master Balthazar von Schlieben, the bailiff, acquired the Lordship of Sonnenburg (nowadays: Słońsk) from Margrave Friedrich I of Brandenburg. In 1460 Elector Friedrich II of Brandenburg gained the right of nomination of the Lord Masters and basically gained control over the bailiwick. In 1583 Elector Joachim II converted to Protestantism. Already in 1545 was decided that also married and converted people could remain as members in the order, but later both sides drifted apart. The Grandmaster of the Order in Malta Jean de la Cassière appointed a Catholic bailiff in 1581, and until 1811 since then there had been a Protestant bailiff and a Catholic counter bailiff. Attempts of the Prussian king Friedrich the Great to reunite the Protestant and Catholic branches failed. Between 1625 and 1641 a Catholic was also respected by the Protestant branch. After 1648 the bailiwick lost nearly all its possessions. In 1811 the bailiwick was secularised by Prussia but restored in 1852, however without acquisition of its former properties.
